How to Build a Social Media Strategy That Actually Converts

Social media isn't about posting for the sake of it. I've managed social accounts for local businesses, brands, and entertainment figures, and the common thread is clear: success comes from treating social media as a business channel, not a creative playground.

The Platform-Specific Approach

The biggest mistake businesses make is creating the same content for every platform. What works on Instagram Reels looks nothing like a high-performing Facebook post or TikTok video. Each platform has its own algorithm, audience behavior, and content format preferences.

I build platform-specific strategies that account for these differences. Instagram rewards consistency and aesthetic cohesion. TikTok rewards authenticity and trends. Facebook rewards community engagement and video watch time. LinkedIn rewards thought leadership and professional insights. Treating them all the same means underperforming on all of them.

Content That Builds Trust

Every post should serve one of three purposes: educate, entertain, or convert. The businesses that win on social media lead with value — teaching their audience something useful, showing behind-the-scenes authenticity, or entertaining in a way that builds brand affinity. Promotional content works best when it's the minority of your posts, not the majority.

For local businesses, this means showing real people, real processes, and real stories — not just product photos. The businesses I've worked with that embraced authentic content consistently outperform those posting generic stock ads.

Measuring What Matters

Likes and followers are vanity metrics. I track engagement rate, website traffic from social, DM inquiries, and ultimately — leads and revenue influenced by social content. If your social media can't be connected to business outcomes, the strategy needs to change.
